Background of the Study

Political influencer marketing has emerged as a compelling strategy in modern electoral campaigns, particularly in urban centers like Lagos. Influencers, who command significant followings on social media platforms, are increasingly recruited by political campaigns to sway public opinion and boost voter turnout. This study examines the role of political influencer marketing within a political campaign in Lagos, exploring how influencer endorsements and digital content can mobilize voters and shape electoral outcomes (Afolabi, 2023). The integration of influencer marketing into political strategies represents a shift from traditional advertising to more personalized, trust-based communication methods. Influencers, seen as authentic voices, can deliver political messages in a relatable manner that resonates with diverse audiences, especially young voters. However, the effectiveness of such strategies in converting online engagement into real-world political participation remains contested. The research considers both the potential benefits and challenges of political influencer marketing, including issues of credibility, bias, and the commercialization of political discourse. By analyzing campaign data, social media metrics, and voter turnout records, this study aims to provide an empirical assessment of how influencer marketing impacts voter behavior and democratic engagement in Lagos (Afolabi, 2024).

Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing use of political influencer marketing in Lagos, its actual impact on voter turnout remains inadequately understood. The phenomenon raises questions about the reliability of influencers as political communicators and whether their endorsements lead to substantive political engagement or merely superficial online interactions (Afolabi, 2023). Additionally, challenges such as misinformation, commercial bias, and the authenticity of influencer content complicate the analysis of their influence on voter behavior. This study seeks to address these concerns by evaluating the correlation between influencer-led political messaging and voter turnout. The objective is to discern whether political influencer marketing translates into increased electoral participation and to identify potential pitfalls that may undermine its effectiveness (Afolabi, 2024).
